Bonsai is almost always an ordinary tree, such as a juniper or maple, pruned and trimmed back to maintain its small size and particular shape. What sets a bonsai tree apart from your run-of-the-mill houseplant or tree in the yard is the time and attention spent training it into a specific shape or style.

All bonsai trees and shrubs require nutrients to grow. Their must essential nutrients are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These are often referred to as N-P-K. Nitrogen ensures strong, leafy growth; phosphorus promotes root growth; and flowers and fruit depend on potassium. To make sure you end up with a healthy tree, look for shiny, vibrant leaves or needles, as shriveled or yellowish foliage can be a sign of pests or disease.
